“Mrs. Watson sure had a different story about who my family is than what you’re telling me, Quincy.” I shook my head, staring out of the tinted window of his white Chevy Tahoe. “She told Blue that it was my mother’s family who didn’t approve of Ira. That I was just a product of an underage relationship. I’m sure she heard about the Kravitz family. Why wouldn’t she tell Blue the truth?”

“Because the truth hurts, Ma.” Quincy glanced at me, cruising down the street, bumpin’ NWA. “You good, Ma? You need anything? Like a hug or something?”

I looked at him. He knew I was in my feelings about Niyah. “Nigga, are you laughing? Really?” I watched the muthafucka snickering, chrome slugs glistening. “Oh, I’m glad you think this shit is funny, Quincy.”

Quincy ended his laugh with a sigh. “Hell yeah the shit is funny. It doesn’t feel good to love someone who you feel is in love with someone else, does it?”

I looked at Quincy as the smile smeared from his face. “Oh, sure, contract killer, try and put the guilt trip on me. My heart is really breaking here, and your ass is over here, cracking jokes! I have lived a crazy life, Q’. And I thought I dealt with all of my regrets until the day that Blue found out that I was a stripping prostitute. And just when I thought I could really make a change and get my life back together after fuckin’ up for so long, Blue’s past pops back up! Niyah Rodgers is every nigga’s dream! A girl who’s down to ride till death! He’s gonna chose her, Quincy!”

Quincy grabbed my thigh. I could feel the warmth of his grasp through my pants. “Nah, shawty. Blue loves you. That nigga is crazy about you. I know crazy in love when I see it, boo.”

“How?” I dried the tears that escaped from my eyes.

“Because I know how I feel about you.” Quincy glanced at me, gripping my thigh a little tighter.

I sighed a little before placing my hand over his. I grabbed his hand, sliding it from my thigh. “Okay, so what’s the plan?”

“The Sparks Boys have been lighting my phone up since they found out their sista is in the hospital.” Quincy shook his head. “Those four used to take niggas out for me back in the day. Rico and Osias box professionally. Bates, well, he just got off on about three murder charges because they couldn’t find the bodies. I heard the nigga ate ‘em.”

“I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit, Quincy. That’s sick.” I clutched my stomach.

“Well, crazy sick niggas get the job done, leaving no evidence behind. With the shit we do for a living, we can’t afford mistakes, know what I mean?” Quincy leaned back in his seat. “This is the game we chose to play. Niggas getting laid down every day. All over dumb shit. All over shit they can’t change.”

I looked at Quincy’s profile, watching his temples twitch a little.
